Sport is definitely on the up if lacking in consistency.

Match weights have been fairly respectable this week, Scunthorpe’s Walt Smith ventured out for the first time this year and won the Friday Open with 91lbs of Carp from peg 15 in the “New Bit” of the Swan Pond, pushing Barnsley’s Shaun Sanders’ 75lbs into second place.

A phenomenal Silverfish only match on the Oak Tree pond this weekend saw the top ten weigh in over 400lbs of fish and with Skimmer Bream averaging around 2-8 ozs, everyone was kept busy.

Grimsby’s Paul Seed topped the list with an excellent 47lbs and with the 8th man weighing over 40lbs it was a really close field.

Tripp lake seems to have gone quiet recently, especially for silverfish and Neil Vessey landed 6 Carp and a couple of Crucians to win the Sunday open with 33lbs, just edging out John palmer who had a similar net but fell 2lbs short.

The Day Ticket ponds are producing reasonable results with Merry’s Pool in particularly good form. Carp to 14lbs in catches of up to 15 fish in a sitting are keeping anglers busy on a variety of baits and methods.

Some tremendous catches of Roach have been reported from the North and South day ticket ponds with fish to 1.5lbs landed. Chub to 4lbs and Perch to 3.5lbs are also turning up as a bonus, although Carp are proving elusive at the moment.

As well as providing some amazing silverfish catches the Oak Tree Pond is also fishing well for Carp, with fish from a few ounces up to low double figures falling to a variety of baits.

Match Results mirror the sport on all of the ponds at the moment with Carp fishing remaining moderate but Silver fish catches at a reasonable level.

Winning weights from the Swan Pond have varied between 25lbs and 55lbs in the Carp matches, Jamie Wilde from Goldthorpe won the Friday open with 55lbs and Messingham's Tony Griffiths won the Sunday Open with 51lbs.

Goldthorpe had a 69lbs winning weight from the Islands Lake in their winter League on Saturday and Martin Leck landed a perch just short of 4lbs on a day when Carp, Chub, Perch and Skimmers fed fairly well.

The Oak Tree pond is still in excellent form for Skimmers and more Carp are now feeding although weather conditions are having a big impact at the moment.

Another week in which poor weather conditions have affected results especially for those anglers targeting Carp.

Silverfish catches have remained good with the Oak Tree pond in particular in excellent form. Two club matches were moved onto the Oak Tree pond at the weekend due to the poor conditions and Crowle A.C. in particular had a consistent match with 14 anglers catching 220lbs of skimmers and a winning weight of 19lbs.

In the other match one angler landed 360 small skimmers for 41lbs fishing maggot over groundbait, this in spite of temperatures hovering around freezing all day.

Surprisingly enough some Carp are being caught amongst the Silverfish and small baits are definitely outscoring the normal mouthfuls that the Carp anglers are offering.

Merry,s Pool fished well at the weekend, despite being partially frozen over and light feeder tactics again with small baits proving successful for Carp to 6lbs.

The Silverfish Open on the Swan Pond produced plenty of bites for everyone by fishing pole through holes in the ice and most had double figures of Roach Perch and Skimmers.

Carp didn’t take kindly to the cold North Easterly winds blowing across the lakes last week and refused to feed. Sport was probably as bad as it has been all winter although things did pick up over the weekend.

Goldthorpe A.C. had low expectations for their open match on the Swan Pond on Saturday  and the winning weight of 70lbs and some good backing weights surprised everybody.

Similarly, Queen Bess A.C. had a70lbs + winning weight of Carp in their Saturday match on the Tripp lake, the winning method was maggots fished shallow on the waggler for Carp to 6lbs.

The Oak Tree pond is in exceptional form for Skimmers and the Silver Fish Open on Saturday saw the Top three competitors weigh in over 100lbs of silverfish between them, with the 10th man having over 20lbs of fish.

Despite a week in which the lakes have iced over and defrosted almost on a daily basis, some good results have been achieved as can be seen from the latest match returns.

The Sunday open on the Swan pond was won by Roger Hill from Sheffield, surprisingly from peg 54 which was the shallowest peg in the match, Roger fished bomb and meat for 70lbs of Carp.

Goldthorpe switched their Saturday Open from a frozen up Islands Lake to Merry’s Pool. The winner with 56lbs of Carp headed a string of reasonable weights.

Paul Brunyee from Castleford won a close run Silverfish match on Saturday on the Swan pond with 15lbs of Skimmers and Goldfish.

Plenty of quality Roach, Skimmers and Perch from the North and South Day ticket Lakes and almost a bite every cast on light tackle and small baits on the Oak Tree Pond as anglers enjoy the prolific stocks of Skimmers which feed whatever the weather.

Cold weather has once again hit hard, with all of the lakes freezing over on Saturday night.

Steve Binghams 139lb winning weight in the Wednesday Open match on the Swan Pond was backed up by Goldthorpes Jamie Hall who won the Saturday winter league event on the Islands Lake with 69lbs despite freezing conditions.

This suggests that given reasonable conditions, some really good weights are on the cards.

Some Syndicate members who were camped out over the weekend had taken some nice fish, unfortunately when they woke up on Sunday morning they found the lakes resembling ice rinks and were forced to pack up and leave much earlier than expected.

Craig Williams had to chop and change methods and baits in the Silverfish Open on the Swan Pond and put together a mixed bag for 13lbs to win a close  match in which most competitors managed around 10lbs.

At last the Carp are showing an appetite as temperatures rise.

The angler who benefited the most from this upturn was Gainsborough's Steve Bingham. Steve won the Wednesday open on the Swan Pond with a really impressive 18 Carp catch totalling 139lbs 9ozs.

The catch was taken on bomb and meat from peg 38 on the golf course bank.

Anglers have returned in numbers after the recent freeze up and sport is improving quickly as temperatures return to normal.

Although Silver fish sport remained reasonable throughout, Carp fishing certainly took a back seat.

Noticeably more Carp are now showing both to pleasure anglers and match men alike.

The Syndicate lakes saw a return by the Bivvie men who put in 24 and 48 hour sessions and they were rewarded with some reasonable catches this weekend.

Steve ellis confounded the conditions on Tripp Lake at the weekend to win the Sunday Open with an 18 Carp catch for 58lbs. The surprising thing was that Steve took quite a few of his fish on paste, which is normally a warm weather bait.

Sundays Open on the Swan pond also saw Carp win for the first time this year with 38lbs taking the prize money.

The Wednesday Open on the Swan Pond failed to produce any Carp, although Scotters' John Crompton did have an epic battle with an umbrella which was blown in last  weekend and attached itself to his ledger tackle.              The match actually produced plenty of bites for the silverfish men and Sheffield anglers John Gunn and Dean Boot tied for first place each with 11 lbs 4 ozs of Skimmers.

 18-01-10

With a return to normal weather conditions, many of the lakes are now fishable without having to reach for the ice breakers.

The Oak Tree pond is now completely ice free and fishing really well for skimmers. Maggot or soft pellet over groundbait fished on light tackle on the pole will produce plenty of bites from skimmers to 8ozs. Catches between 15 and 25 lbs have been taken over the weekend.

The North Day Ticket pond is still partially frozen but most of the South Day Ticket pond is ice free and can be expected to fish well for Roach and Skimmers with odd Carp towards the afternoon.

Matches last weekend saw plenty of silverfish caught and 20lbs of Roach won a club match on the Swan Pond.

Tommy Grice from Doncaster won the Sunday Open with over 30lbs of Carp, Skimmers and Crucians.

Only a very few hardened souls turned out to fish the weekend matches  which was very fortunate as only a limited number of pegs were ice free.

Neil Vessey won on Saturday from the Oak Tree pond with 20lbs  and Mark Lidgard had 15lbs to win the Sunday match. Both anglers caught Skimmers on soft pellet over groundbait on the pole. Weights were surprisingly good, with plenty of double figure nets of small fish on both days.

Nobby Winters has succesfully targeted the bigger Perch in the Silver Fish Opens on the Swan Pond this winter and once again landed a good specimen,  this fish weighed 2lbs 10zos and came to double caster on the feeder.

3-01-10

Although most of the ponds remain frozen over some fishing did take place over the weekend.

Around a dozen pegs were free of ice on the Oak Tree Pond and anglers were surprised to find plenty of Skimmers feeding with one angler catching over 70 fish on pole and maggot.

The Silverfish match on the Swan Pond attracted only a hardened few, but these anglers were well pleased with the catches taken.

Mick Grant from Castleford led the way with a mixed bag which included around 50 small Roach and Perch, topped up with some quality Skimmers and a 2lb Perch all taken on long pole with maggot and pellet.

Neil Vessey from Scunthorpe stuck to his guns by fishing pellet over groundbait and despite not having a bite for the first 3 hours managed over 13lbs of quality Skimmers by the whistle.

Sunday’s match on the Tripp Lake saw a battle to get through around 3 inches of ice at the start. Steve Ellis found it well worthwhile however with 23lbs of Carp, Crucians and Skimmers for an easy win.

In spite of the freezing conditions at the weekend and ice breaking equipment being needed by anglers to clear a fishing area some reasonable weights were taken in the fishing matches which were held.

The fish were more concentrated in certain areas as is the norm when water temperatures really fall, which meant plenty of bites for those drawn in the right pegs.

Steve Ellis made the most of a couple of good draws finishing second on Saturday on the Swan Pond with 12lbs of Roach and Perch and did really well to win the Tripp match on Sunday with 21lbs of Crucian Carp, despite the fact that the pond was continually freezing over whilst the match took place.

Nobby Winters scored another good win on the Swan Pond, once again courtesy of some really good Perch taken on pole fished caster and 15lbs was no mean weight under the conditions.

Roland Sparkes who is a regular visitor to the fishery has recently been concentrating on the Oak Tree Day ticket pond and completely turns upside down the normal theories for winter Carp fishing.

Roland from Grimsby targets the Carp on floating baits such as dog biscuits and pellets and has caught on every visit; his usual level of success has been between 5 and 15 Carp per visit with the fish averaging around 3-4lbs.

Whilst catching Carp on floating baits in winter is in itself quite a feat, Roland really amazed everyone this week, including himself by catching 52 Carp on one day.

The pond is also a banker for Skimmer Bream with 30-50lb catches commonplace.

Quality Roach, Chub and Skimmers are the mainstay on the on the North and South day ticket ponds with odd Carp featuring in the catches.

On the Match scene a 22lb Carp was caught from the Swan pond in a club match and John Rocket from Scotter included 2 double figure fish in his catch to win the Friday open match this week.

The up and down nature of winter fishing could be seen on the islands lake last week. Anglers fishing on a Saturday match really struggled for bites and weights were very moderate whilst the following day Gunnies Tackle from Sheffield turned up expecting to struggle in a similar manner and found the fish feeding freely in their Silverfish only event. A number of 20lb weights of Skimmers and Roach were taken and everyone caught well.

Carl Urry from Scunthorpe has really mastered the Tripp Lake this winter and has just won his third consecutive club match with over 60lbs of Carp fishing pellet and maggot up in the water on the waggler.

Sport on all of the lakes has been affected by recent heavy rainfall and a drop in temperatures.

Whilst Silver Fish sport remains at a good level on all lakes the weight boosting Carp especially prized by the match anglers are becoming less willing to feed..

Tripp Lake, which is one of our deepest waters and therefore less susceptible to rapid temperature changes remains the exception. Tommy Grice won a recent match with over 100lbs of Carp on pole and paste from peg 33 to lead a list of very good weights and over 60lbs has been needed to win most matches recently.

The Islands Lake on the other hand is one of our shallowest lakes and has seen a real downturn in results. A couple of weeks ago Steve Ellis won the Silverfish open with over 50lbs of Skimmers on the pole but this weekend saw many anglers scratching around for bites.

In the last round of the silverfish league some fairly hefty Perch showed including a 3lbs fish for winner Nobby Winters from peg 49 on the Swan pond.

The Oak Tree day ticket pond is a banker for a good day on Skimmers with maggots and soft pellet over groundbait the best approach.Carp are still being caught in reasonable numbers but feeding times can be short and hectic with plenty of quiet spells.

The North and South day ticket ponds are in good form for Roach and Skimmers with odd Chub and large Perch showing.

Match results continue to fall steadily as Carp feature less in the catches. Silverfish tactics or a mixed approach between Carp and Silverfish are proving successful in most matches now and some excellent nets of Roach, Skimmers and Perch are being taken on a variety of tactics.

The Oak Tree pond continues to fish well for Carp with up to 40 fish taken in a sitting this week and Skimmer Bream are feeding well on pellets or maggots.

The South day Ticket pond has produced Carp to mid double figures as well as Chub to 4lbs and plenty of really good Roach.

2-11-09

The effects of the mild weather can be seen on the Oak Tree pond where Carp are still taking surface baits with enthusiasm and Grimsby’s Roland Sparks enjoyed a 46 Carp catch on floating pellet for around 200lbs this week.

The North and South Ponds are also fishing well for Carp with plenty of double figure fish coming out, Silver fish catches between 20lbs and 40lbs are also commonplace with some really good Roach feeding up in the water.

Goxhill angler, Trevor West scored a good win on the Wednesday open on the Islands Lake, fishing pellet and meat on the bomb, Trev landed Carp to 5lbs, Chub to 4lbs and Ide to 1.5lbs for a 65lbs total.

Winning weights on the Islands Lake remain consistently around the 60lbs mark.

Carl Urry found Carp feeding well on the Tripp Lake in the Queen Bess club match at the weekend, landing 94lbs to beat Dave Skinner's 78lbs into second place.

Tommy Grice from Doncaster ended a lean spell on the Friday Open on the Swan pond, fishing waggler and pellet he put 104lbs on the scales for a comfortable win.

The second match in the Silverfish series produced some excellent weights as the mild weather continues. Most of the field topped the twenty pound mark with Skimmers Roach and Perch responding to a variety of baits fished on the pole, although once again unwanted Carp made short work of some very light tackle.

Scunthorpe angler Neil Vessey fished pellet on his trade mark 8m pole to hand on peg 49, taking 4ozs to 8ozs skimmers through the match for an excellent 47lbs.

Although match weights are falling steadily, Carp continue to dominate and John Palmer found fish feeding at half depth on the waggler to win the Friday open on the Swan pond with 109lbs.

The first Silver Fish match of the season also saw plenty of Carp caught and lost on small baits and light tackle and although all of those fish that were landed were returned un-weighed, results were excellent with most anglers weighing in over 20lbs of Roach and Skimmers and the winner taking over 43lbs to the scales.

Some fairly hefty Carp have been caught by pleasure anglers, fish to 16lbs from Merry’s Pool, two twenty pound plus fish from the main syndicate lake and fish to 15lbs from the North and South day ticket ponds.

Falling water temperatures are certainly having an effect on sport on all of the lakes.

Very often mornings see a slow start improving steadily during the day.

Smaller baits and swapping and changing methods will get the best from each swim as the fish adjust to cooler conditions.

On the match scene, silver fish catches are now beginning to compete with the Carp weights, with the exception of the Swan Pond which continues to produce some hefty nets of fish topped by Goole angler John Palmer who netted 140lbs of Carp on waggler fished pellet to win the Wednesday open.

A great result for the pupils of Huntcliff School who had never fished the Tripp Lake before, indeed the winner had not fished for 3 years up to this match and still he made it look easy.

It was a pleasure to see the enthusiasm and hear the banter associated with a good day out.

12-10-09

The Oak Tree pond remains on top form for Carp with most methods proving succesful. Smaller daits are tending to be more affective as temperatures fall.

The North and South day ticket ponds are producing plenty of double figure fish up to 18lbs in weight and the Silver fish sport is excellent with quality Roach and Skimmers falling to a variety of baits.

Match weights are slowly falling and Silver Fish weights are now beginning to feature in the frame. John Palmer managed second place on the Islands Lake with an all Skimmer net of 61lbs although Carl Urry scored a clear win on the day with 73lbs of Carp on the waggler.

The latest match on the recently opened Merry’s Pool provided some hectic sport for those in the money. The bigger fish were noticeable by their absence but large numbers of carp and skimmers in the 8ozs to 2lbs mark made up weights to over 80lbs, the winner, John Palmer from Goole taking his fish on small pellet over groundbait.

As usual at this time of year, sport can be slow in the morning as night time temperatures fall, improving steadily as the day goes on.

Some good catches of Carp have been taken from the North and South day ticket ponds, including an 18 ˝ lbs fish caught by Daniel Harryman from Scunthorpe. Daniel had a number of other double figure fish all falling to legered luncheon meat.

Match weights are beginning to fall, in particular on the Islands Lake which is fairly shallow compared to most of the other match pools. Weights of around 50 to 90lbs are taking the prizes now on here and the double tons which have been the feature this year on the Swan pond are probably finished for the season as autumn sets in.

The match fishing is producing some fantastic catches across the lakes but non more profitable than for Mathew Rowe in the GY Hookers club match. Mathew drew peg 48 on the Swan Pond and landed an excellent 162lbs of Carp on large pellet on the waggler to claim the first prize on the day of Ł100. Much to his delight, he also claimed the long running Golden Peg pool which stood at a very handy Ł500.

The Swan Pond hit top form again this week with two matches won with over 200lbs.

Paul Wright scored his third double ton from this lake when he won the Friday open match from peg 49 with 227lbs of Carp on waggler fished 11mm pellet. Paul landed a really good stamp of fish with a number between 10lbs and 14lbs in his catch.

Following closely behind, Steve Horncastle from Leeds won his club match with 221lbs.

With fish of a much smaller stamp, Gooles Les Rogers was equally as busy in the Saturday Open on Hollywood Lake when he won with 81lbs of small Carp, Skimmers and Ide. Les fished Sweetcorn Shallow on the pole.

Islands Lake has had 3 100lbs winning weights this week, the most popular being that on the Wednesday Open when Octogenarian and true gentleman Todd Carruthers from Bradford Landed a hefty 125lbs of Carp on bomb and pellet from peg 5.

The Day Ticket pond are all in exceptional form as regular Roland Sparkes from Grimsby proved when he fished floating pellet on the Oak Tree Pond and caught98 Carp from 3lbs to 6lbs.

The Syndicate Lakes are also producing some memorable catches which include Catfish to 32 lbs and Carp to 22lbs this week.

The Lakes continue to provide top class sport and more notable catches have been taken recently.

The biggest ever fish from the fishery was landed this week from the South Day Ticket pond in the shape of a 35lbs Catfish.

Scunthorpe angler David Vangelder found legered luncheon meat to be the successful method and this fish tops a list of 25lbs plus fish caught from the Day Ticket ponds this season.

Another 200lbs plus match weight was recorded from the Swan Pond at the weekend, 244lbs in the British Rail club match, again waggler fished 10mm hard pellet proving irresistible to a string of Carp from a few pounds to mid-double figures.

28-06-09

After a couple of weeks of patchy results the fish seem to have put their spawning activities behind them and are now making up for a few missed meals.

The Saturday open match was nothing short of sensational with the top five anglers weighing in a staggering 900lbs of Carp from 2lbs to 12lbs. The dominant method remains 11mm hard pellet fished on the drop on the waggler. Most of the fish are caught as the pellet is falling through the water and regular feed with pellets are essential to keep the fish active.

John Palmer from Goole landed the second highest ever weight from the Swan Pond, John fed 5 bags of pellets on peg 57, fishing a 6 gramme Carrusso waggler on a14 hook for a superb 256lbs of fish.

Second and third places both had over 180lbs of fish and fifth man needed over 100lbs to make the frame.

Club matches have also faired well and GY hookers showed that they are no slouches on the Swan Pond with a number of 100lbs plus weights topped by a 179lb catch from peg 37 on Friday.

The Islands lake has also produced a number of 100lb plus winning weights in club matches and with nets of Roach and Skimmers to 50lbs being taken as back up weights sport is very good at the moment.

The Sunday open on Tripp Lake was won by Gainsborough’s Paul Wright and the ever consistent Shane Blades won the Wednesday open on the Swan Pond with 117lbs.

The Day Ticket lakes are also in sensational form as Oak Tree regular Roland Sparks from Grimsby proved with a 97 carp catch on floating pellet for an estimated 350lbs catch.

Merry’s Pool gave Bottesford angler Jay Clague an arm aching hour as he hooked and landed an 18lbs and a 12lbs Carp on consecutive casts on luncheon meat fished on the pole.

The North and South day ticket Ponds are also in great form for all species and two anglers who regularly fish the lakes together each had a large Catfish recently.

Les Carr from Winterton landed a 25 lbs Catfish and the following week George White from Barrow went one better with a 28lbs fish. Both catches were taken on legered luncheon meat in the North Day ticket Lake.

Wednesday Open Swan pond 18 fished

1 Mick Deaton  Bradford 162-7

2 Garry Bingham Gainsborough 93-8

3 Mark Deans Scunthorpe 74-5

Mick landed carp from 2lbs to 12lbs on 11mm hard pellet on bomb and pole from peg 54 on the shallows. Garry Bingham had a similar stamp of fish all on bomb and pellet from peg 3.

Friday Open Tripp 17 fished

1 Don Hudson Scunthorpe 55-05

2 Neil Vessey Scunthorpe 55-01

3 Martin Day Goldthorpe 48-09

With recent spawning activity putting a damper on this normally prolific Friday afternoon

Open match, Don Hudson landed enough Carp to beat off Neil Vessey’s net of Crucians in a tight finish.

Saturday Open Islands Lake 20 fished

1 Sean Sanders Goldthorpe 89-09

2 Shane Blades Grimsby 69-05

3 Geoff Wild Goldthorpe 48-10

Weights again down on normal as fish appear to be preoccupied with either spawning or feeding on the eggs produced by other species.

Sunday Open Hollywood Lake 17 fished

1 Don Hudson Scunthorpe 36-12

2 Mark Deans Scunthorpe 35-11

3 Steve Ellis Scunthorpe 25-10

Don scored another win on the pole with carp to 3lbs on meat down the margins. Again, plenty of fish moving around but sport generally below par.

Typically for this time of the year, catches are very much up and down depending on whether the fish are preparing to spawn or are actually engaging in the activity.

Graham Webster from Sheffield managed to persuade enough Carp to feed in his club match on Sunday from peg 5 on the Islands Lake to break the ton with 109lbs of fish but many matches are being won with Silver fish nets from 30-60lbs at the moment. Up in the water tactics with Caster, Chopped worm or soft pellets have all scored recently.

13-06-09

Match Results have been dominated by Carp this week with the exception of the Saturday Open on the Islands Lake which was won with over 60lbs of Skimmer Bream.

Saturday seemed to show a drop off in sport in general across the match lakes as spawning activity appeared to affect results.

Hollywood Lake saw a club match won with only 20lbs of fish while 24hours later over 60lbs was needed and 30lbs to make the frame.

Shane Blades from Grimsby who is probably the most consistent Carp Angler on the local match circuit proved his worth this week by winning 3 consecutive matches with weights of87lbs and 98lbs from the Islands Lake and 174lbs from the Swan Pond against some stiff opposition.

Rolies league was won in style by Gainsborough Angler Paul Wright, another top local match angler with a 5 match score of just 10 points. Paul came second in three consecutive matches in the league, no mean feat with between 30 and 40 entering each match, his worst position being 4th place.

The dominant method at the moment is 11mm hard pellet fished on the drop on the waggler.

Scunthorpes Carl Urry proved the effectiveness of this method on the North Day Ticket pond one evening by landing 38 Carp from 2lbs to 9 lbs in just over 2 hours.

The Oak Tree pond is in top form and floating baits are particularly effective in the warm weather.

The new day ticket lake, Merry’s Pool is also producing some excellent catches, Hull angler Shaun Taylor landed a number of double figure fish on floating Bread topped by an 18lbs Common Carp.

Dennis Thornton from Sheffield also had fish to 14lbs on the Pole in a 70lbs catch on pellet  and meat and another angler landed 2 Albino Grass Carp around the 9lbs mark.

Former Scunthorpe National angler and winner of the division one national championship, Don Lear showed that he hasn’t lost his touch at the weekend, Don caught 40lbs of Roach and Rudd on caster on the Islands lake in a recent club match and although 100lbs was needed to win, this was an excellent catch for a 74 year old.

A strong east wind made conditions difficult and weights suffered accordingly, pegs 2 and 3 at the more sheltered end of the lake provided the first two individuals.

Tripp Lake was in fantastic form on a recent Friday afternoon match and Scunthorpe’s Don Hudson weighed in a personal best pole caught match weight of 174lbs of Carp. Don fished meat in the margins on peg 15.

The shallows are dominating the results at the moment on Tripp and one club had a lowest weight of over 30lbs and a best of 79lbs at the weekend.

The draw for the Saturday Silverfish Matches will

be held at 08-30 at  the HORN INN MESSINGHAM the directions to which are shown above.

Events And Results

Wednesdays open match on the Swan pond saw anglers breaking the ice in places in order to wet a line. The Carp anglers found bites few and far between although Gainsborough’s Keith Palmer found two good fish for a winning 22lbs 15ozs.

Silver fish made up all of the backing weights with 13lbs of quality Roach taken by Sheffield's Brian Chatterton  in second place.

Saturdays Silver Fish Open on the Swan Pond was fished in subzero conditions with many pegs freezing over during the match. Despite this some reasonable weights were taken and Les Rogers from Goole caught  Roach to 10ozs up in the water on maggot for a winning 11lbs.

Sunday saw anglers once again breaking the ice, this time on the Tripp Lake Open.

John Palmer continued his excellent run of results on this venue, winning with 19lbs of Roach and Skimmers.

The North and South day ticket ponds are in tremendous form for silver fish.

Roach to 1 ˝ lbs are feeding really well up in the water. Perch to 2 ˝ lbs and  Chub are also coming out regularly to maggot or caster.

The Oak Tree Pond is also in excellent form for Skimmers and Carp with maggots, pellets and corn the best baits at the moment.

The Syndicate members enjoyed some excellent sport during the recent mild spell with anglers landing as many as 21 Carp from 8lbs to over 20lbs in a sitting, although the catches dropped off quickly as would be expected when the temperatures fell back to freezing again.

It took quite some time to break the ice for the Wednesday open on the Swan Pond, the disturbance did not put the fish off however and Gainsborough angler Paul Wright caught a double figure Carp first cast on his way to a winning 43lbs on bomb fished meat.

Most people had a decent day under the conditions with nets of silverfish to 16lbs.

The Saturday Silverfish open was fished in freezing cold conditions and driving rain, not the most pleasant of conditions. Despite this weights were reasonable and Tommy Grice led the way with 16lbs of Skimmers and Roach.

Sheffield tackle dealer John Gunn continued his excellent run on the Swan Pond with another win in the Wednesday open this week.

John landed 19 carp on meat for 89-5 to edge out fellow Sheffield angler Ted Palmer.

Weights were reasonably good all around the lake and some hefty specimens  were landed including a 21-12 Ghost Carp taken on pellet by Garry Bingham from Gainsborough.

John Palmer from Goole won the Saturday silverfish open which was switched from the Islands Lake to the Swan Pond in order to make use of more sheltered pegs in freezing conditions. John fished a groundbait feeder to land 21lbs of skimmers.

Ray Woodhall from Doncaster scored an easy win on the Tripp Lake on Sunday. Whilst most people struggled for a bite after a couple of freezing cold days, Ray put together 51lbs of small carp from peg 33.

There have been some tremendous weights of carp in recent matches.

The notable catches have been shared evenly between the Swan Pond and the Islands Lake, with numerous 100lbs plus catches taken.

Shane Blades from Grimsby has been particularly busy , fishing small boilie over large pellet on the waggler has seen Shane take 199-10ozs from peg 5 on the Islands Lake and 167-6ozs from the Swan.

Peg 5 on Islands also produced a 180-12 catch for Scunthorpe’s Don Hudson.

Chapman’s Tackle manageress Dianne Smith had an excellent run last week, she won a match on the Swan Pond with 187-15 on bomb and pellet, came third on the Tripp Lake with 100-3 on pole and paste and won on Hollywood lake with 44-4, again on the paste.

Not to be out done, husband Walt Smith scored a notable double by winning both open matches on the Swan this weekend with 141lbs on Saturday and 175lbs on Sunday.

Match Rule Change

After discussions with  match anglers  who fish with us on a regular basis we have decided to increase the maximum shotting capacity for wagglers to 12 grams.

Please note that a maximum diameter of 8 mm for the visible part of the float still applies in order to prevent the use of self hooking floats.

At long last the New Fishery Office and Shop is now open.

Toilet facilities for able bodied and disabled persons are now available.

The Shop will provide the only source for the Fish Pellets allowed at the Fishery and a selection of other baits are also available.

Please note that our longstanding rule is that only pellets supplied by Messingham Sands Fishery may be used on our Lakes. (see the fishery rules page for details)

Please also note that  fishery pellets supplied from  the Cafe  at Grange Park Fisheries are no longer allowed at Messingham Sands Fishery.

Match Results

5-10-09

Match winning weights are definitely getting lower as water temperatures fall.

The exception remains the Swan Pond which is quite deep and takes longer to cool down.

Paul Wright, who has taken some huge catches this year on the waggler and pellet once again persuaded the Carp to feed well on the Friday Open. Fishing on peg twelve on the Swan he almost doubled the weight of second place with 182lbs.

Todd Carruthers made the journey from Bradford worth while again by winning the Wednesday open on the Swan pond with 121lbs of Carp, Todd beat Trev West into second place by just one fish as Trev scored his first ever 100lbs plus match catch, not bad for a couple of old boys.

Although night time temperatures are now dropping, sport remains consistently good with plenty of 100lbs plus weights this week in the matches. The most impressive being the new pond record set on Hollywood Lake by Gooles Les Rogers. Les fished in the margins on corn over pellet , taking Carp from 8ozs to 5lbs.

The Syndicate Lake is also producing some impressive fish including a 28lbs Carp and Catfish to 34lbs.

Other match weights include a 166lbs catch by Don Hudson on the Swan Pond which pushed John Rocket into second place with 146lbs in a match which saw 6 100lbs plus weights.

181lbs was enough for Mark Deans to beat Paul Wright in another open but only by 3lbs.

Simon Drayton from Scotter had an excellent 135lbs of Carp to win a Friday open on Tripp and Steve Ellis won another with 180lbs.

The bank Holiday Pairs match was won comfortably by Rob Seward and Shane Blades of Black Row Engineering with an impressive score of 4 points.

Rob won the Islands Lake in this event with 124-8 whilst Garry Hansford was top on the Swan Pond with 113-3

Steve Ellis drew peg 64 in a recent club match on the Islands Lake and fished close in on the paste for an impressive 79lbs of Skimmers. With fish from 4ozs to 1 1/2lbs, he had a really busy day.

Rotherham veterans didn,t let age get in the way of some superb catches this week and a match on Tuesday saw the top 5 anglers put over 600lbs of fish on the scales. Tony Beresford topped the list with 187lbs of carp from peg 3 on the Swan Pond.

Just to prove that this was no fluke, they returned on Thursday to fish the Islands Lake and three anglers again topped the ton, with winner Brian Turner bringing 140lbs of fish to the scales.

Scunthorpes Carl Urry decided to put in a few hours waggler practise in on Merry’s Pool this week and found a procession of Carp queuing up for 8mm pellets,  Carl landed over 80 fish from 8ozs to 17.5lbs, with plenty around the 8-9lb mark.

Catches have been consistent across all of the lakes, although the spectacular 200lb+ winning weights from the Swan Pond in recent weeks have seen a nosedive to more normal 100lb+ catches much to the relief of the weighing teams.

The syndicate Lakes have produced some good catches this week, one member landing 25 Carp in a session, including two fish over the 20lb mark. Catfish to 32lbs have also been caught and 11 year old Connor West from Scunthorpe did really well to land a 17lbs Carp on a roach pole from the small syndicate pond.

Merry’s Pool also is also fishing well to most methods and Scunthorpe angler Dave Scanlon found that floating bread sorted out the better fish when he hooked into a 22lbs Common Carp and followed it up with a number of other fish in double figures.

Match weights have taken a bit of a nosedive this week as water levels have come up a couple of inches as a result of the heavy rain.

The heavy rainfall and sharp temperature fall did not have any affect on catches as would be expected.

Paul Wright, who is a regular on the open matches at Messingham Sands joined Gate Inn for their club match on the Swan Pond at the weekend and recorded the highest weight of the year so far and finished agonisingly short of an incredible 300lb. Paul tested the weigher’s arms with his 296lbs of Carp taken on waggler fished 10mm hard pellet.

Tripp Lake was in good form at the weekend and Steve Ellis landed over 100lbs of mainly Crucian Carp on paste from peg 23 to win the Saturday open match.

Sunday saw a full house for the annual Charity Open Match on Tripp which was run in aid of the Lincolnshire House Hospice with the help of Staff and Residents. Thanks in the main to the generosity of anglers and other contributors, the event raised over Ł850.

The conditions left a lot to be desired with some of the heaviest rain of the year making things difficult. The results were close with less than 10lbs separating the top 5.

Mick Wills led the way from peg 10 with 67lbs of Carp on meat. Second placed Nigel Lowrey caught over 100 Crucians on pellet over groundbait for 65lbs on peg 2 and 60lbs of Skimmers on soft pellet made up third place from peg 5.

Merry’s Pool continues to produce a good mixture of mainly Carp Skimmers and Crucians. Scunthorpe Angler Steve Wenzel found meat fished close in on the pole the best method for sorting out the bigger fish and landed fish well in to double figures, including a hefty 17lbs Mirror.

The North and South Lakes have also produced some sizeable specimens including a 20lbs plus fish from the South Pond this week.

The Swan Pond is proving to be a sensation this season as winning weights over the 100lbs mark have become the norm and a few 200lbs plus weights recorded recently.

The Friday open match provided a surprise in the quality of the catches all around the lake, heavy overnight rain and appalling fishing conditions did not raise too many expectations but with the top 7 weighing over 750lbs of fish between them and really good weights following on behind these, a bedraggled bunch of anglers left the fishery with plenty of smiles.

Top rod on the day was Goldthorpe’s Jamie Wilde who fished the now seemingly mandatory up in the water tactics of hard pellet fished on the drop on the waggler on peg 37. Jamie put 166lbs on the scales, finishing over 30lbs clear of Gainsborough’s Mick Willey who recorded his first ever 100lb plus weight; Mick bucked the trend by fishing bomb and pellet on peg two.

Top weight of the week came in the Wednesday open when Fishing Republic backed Mark Deans led the field with 184lbs from peg 12.

The day ticket lakes are also providing exceptional sport.

The Oak Tree Pond provided the fish of a very young lifetime last weekend when 12 year old Liam Rowett landed a mirror carp weighing 20lbs 2ozs. Anglers are catching Carp in abundance with up to 70 fish in a sitting but Skimmers, Rudd and odd Barbel are also featuring well.

Merry’s Pool is in great form for Carp and Skimmers on the pole, with plenty of fish from a few ounces up to 4lbs. Surface tactics however are sorting out the better quality Carp with fish to17lbs being taken in catches of up to 100lbs, odd Grass Carp are also falling for floating baits.

Scunthorpe angler and Messingham Sands Open Match organiser Steve Ellis recorded a remarkable 162lbs win in the Sunday Open. The plaudits are not necessarily due because of this particular result, but because it is his sixth consecutive 100lb plus weight in matches on the Swan Pond. This sequence of results have included a 234lbs weight and several more over 150lbs.

Steve has mastered the current killer method of constant cast and feed on the waggler and large pellet. It sounds easy but involves a hard working and relentless approach to get the fish competing up in the water and Steve has shown that it has worked almost anywhere on the Lake.

The identical tactics also produced the best weight of the week from the Islands Lake on Tuesday, when the Hull Midweek club match was won with 152lbs from peg 48.

Sport on the Islands Lake slowed up towards the weekend after heavy rain and 50 to 80lbs won most of the matches.

Tripp Lake was in top form on the Friday Open Match and Ray Woodhall had a fine 134lbs catch of Carp on meat down the margins to beat John Palmers 122lbs net of Crucian Carp into second place.

The Day Ticket Lakes are all showing excellent form for all species and the Syndicate Lakes have produced Carp to 21lbs and Catfish to 28lbs this week.

The lakes are all in sensational form as can be seen from the match results.

Carp are obviously dominating the catches as they have responded to the warm weather although the North and South day ticket lakes in particular are providing excellent silver fish sport.

Two new match records were set this weekend, Andrew Morely from Kiveton Hall Farm headed a good list of weights in his club match weighing 91lbs of Carp and Skimmers with fish to 3lbs on pole and meat from Hollywood Lake and Les Rogers also caught Skimmers and Carp from Merry’s Pool close in on pole and pellet for a winning 76lbs catch in Saturdays open match.

Another good Catfish came from the Day Ticket ponds recently, Scunthorpe angler Adrian Follows landed a 27lbs fish from the South pond on the unlikely tactics of  Cheese fished on the bomb.

The first of the popular wednesday series, Rolies League, got off to a reasonable start.

Gary Hansford won on the day with 78lbs of Carp on bomb and pellet and second place saw a tie with 71lbs 6 ozs for Tony Hill and Steve Bingham. The back up weights were mainly in the 40lbs bracket with Roach and Skimmer bream nets featuring well.

Weather condtions this week have generally put a damper on sport across the lakes although torrential rain didn,t prevent Jamie Wild from taking another ton weight to win the Friday open on the Swan pond.

The top four pairs all scored 9 points and weight decided the eventual winners, Rob Seward and Shane Blades from Grimsby who had a 165-14 total to push Jamie and Geoff Wild from Goldthorpe into second place on 160-13

Catfish have become very active in the Lakes where they are present.

Lenny Hackshaw had a 40 minute battle with a 20lbs fish from the North Day ticket Lake this week. Lenny hooked the Cat on a single pellet on the waggler whilst fishing for Skimmer Bream.

Doncaster angler Darren Thompson was just returning a 16 ˝ lbs Catfish to the Syndicate Lake when the buzzer sounded on his second rod and another one weighing 29lbs 1oz was added to his haul. Danny landed two other Cat’s of 13 ˝ lbs and 17 ˝ lbs in the same session.

The Syndicate Lakes are also producing plenty of good sized Carp. Kevin Watson landed 17 fish from 8lbs to 16lb in a single session , R. Lancaster caught 15 fish from 10lbs to 21 ˝ lbs and Scunthorpe angler N. Girdham  include fish of 19 ˝ lbs, 20lbs, 22lbs and 23lbs as well as a 9 ˝ lb Bream this week.

Paul Wright won the Wednesday Open on the Swan Pond from peg 3 on the Swan pond with 118lbs followed by John Palmer with 104lbs from peg 13. These weights were bettered on Saturday when Steve Ellis weighed 153lbs and John Palmer came in second again with 134lbs

The most successful method at the moment is hard pellet fished around 2ft deep on the waggler.

The Friday Open on the Islands Lake saw some excellent weights of Silver fish to 60lbs taken but Carp provided the top scorers with Gainsborough’s Keith Palmer leading the way with 82lbs on bomb and pellet and John Palmer once again second with 75lbs.

The increase in water temperatures has encouraged fish to feed well across the lakes, most anglers have enjoyed really good sport from all species.

The North and South day ticket lakes have been particularly good; Pete Smith from Scotter landed four personal best specimens from the South pond in one session. Pete fished breadflake on the waggler to bank a 4lb Chub, a 5 1/5 lb Bream , a 2lb Rudd and a near 3lb Roach.

Another angler also had a surprise in the shape of a 25lb Catfish from the North Pond.

The syndicate lakes have started well with both Carp and Catfish weighing up to 21lbs this week.

On the match front Tommy Grice from Doncaster had the biggest weight of the week taking 129lbs of Carp from peg 55 on the Swan pond in a club event.

Jamie Hall from Goldthorpe also broke the 100lb mark, winning the Sunday open on the Islands Lake. Jamie fished pole and meat on peg 21 to land fish from 2lbs to 13lbs, totalling 149lbs.

Hollywood Lake fished hard on the Saturday open and Dianne Smith found 25lbs of small Carp enough to win from peg 16.

The Syndicate Lakes re-opened this week and Carp to 18.5lbs, Catfish to 21lbs and some noteworthy Perch were caught, including at least two over the 3lb mark

In a terrific pairs match which saw only 5 points separate the top five, Barnsley pair Tom Pickering and Steve Barraclough took the honours with 11 points.

Steve stuck to the silverfish on the Swan Pond and weighed a level 36lbs of Skimmers while his partner swapped between Roach and Carp to finish with 57-7 on the Islands Lake.

As good as the pair’s event was it was overshadowed by the individual performance of Doncaster's Ray Woodhall who won the match with a new lake record of 229-12 of Carp from peg 63 on the Islands Lake.

Ray put his trust in his tackle by fishing meat and pellet over hemp in amongst the reeds on peg 63. Despite the potential to lose fish in this peg, Ray managed to keep most on the hook by applying steady pressure and finished with over 40 Carp to 14 lbs in weight and a well deserved round of applause from his fellow anglers after the weigh in.

The Teams of 5 event on Good Friday provided consistent sport across all three ponds.

The individual winner came from the Swan Pond in the form of Grimsby’s Gary Hansford. Gary fished bomb and pellet on peg 3 for an excellent 149 lbs 14 ozs. Second was Russ Fowler on peg 55 on the Swan pond, Russ fished the same method to weigh 96lbs.

The winning team, R&R Sports of Bawtry scored an easy win with 15 points, second on 24 points were Messingham A and third on 28 points were Fishing Republic Scunthorpe.

Steve Bingham scored another win on the Wednesday Open Fished on the Swan Pond with 69lbs from peg 29

Shane Blades won the Sunday open on the Islands Lake with 83lbs on pole and Corn, catching Carp to 10lbs alongside the reedbeds on peg 63. This match saw some excellent silver fish weights taken, including an all Roach net of 54lbs. Skimmer Bream were also much in evidence with maggots pellets and paste all producing plenty of fish.

Sport is improving on all of the lakes as temperatures continue to rise.

The Oak Tree pond is in excellent form with Carp now dominating the catches and surface baits are proving to be particularly effective.

The North and South day ticket ponds are producing really good sport with silverfish in particular. Skimmer Bream to 2lbs and occasional large Bream can be caught on soft pellet over groundbait, whilst Roach, Chub and Rudd, with plenty of good sized fish, are being taken up in the water on maggots or casters.

The Islands Lake, which has fished fairly hard over winter is now producing some really good mixed bags of Carp and Silverfish, One club angler included one 3lb Carp in an otherwise all Roach net of 49lbs from peg 43 to come second to a 60lbs mixed catch of Carp and Tench.

The Wednesday Open on the Swan pond gave a really good win on the pole for Sheffielder Paul Stanton who landed 121 lbs of Carp from peg 25 to beat Steve Burgess from Grimsby who had 11 fish for 95lbs on bomb and pellet from peg 40.

The Sunday open on the Tripp Lake saw Neil Vessey head the frame with a mixed bag of Crucians, F1’s and small Carp totalling 57lbs.

Sport is very much up and down with the weather at the moment as typified by the results of Grimsby’s Roland Sparkes.

Roland, who is a regular on the syndicate lakes, has turned his attentions to the Oak Tree pond in the past few weeks and has had some incredible catches including a 78 fish haul in one day, all of the fish were Carp and weighed between 2lbs and 9lbs. The tactics varied between floating baits and bomb and pellet. He has been averaging around 40 fish per sitting, although after one particularly cold night only 4 fish saw the landing net.

The North and South day ticket ponds are producing much larger specimens in general, the best reported this week was caught by Tony Chandler from Scunthorpe and weighed 21lbs -8ozs.

The Silverfish league finished this weekend and despite the terrible weather conditions plenty of Roach and Skimmers were caught. Leading the way John Palmer caught Skimmers on the pole and pellet for 31 lbs, closely followed by league winner Kevin Johnson with a 30 lbs net of Roach.

The Sunday Open saw anglers targeting Carp and Steve Ellis caught fish to 12lbs up in the water on waggler and pellet from peg 49 on the Swan Pond for 77lbs, Neil Vessey came second from peg 27 with 59 lbs on bomb and sweetcorn.

Carp dominated the Wednesday Open and Gainsborough's Neil Vernon led the field with 55lbs from peg 40 on the Swan pond.

The penultimate match in the Silverfish League which was held on the Swan Pond on Saturday proved to be the best so far in the series. The top ten weighed in over 260lbs of Roach and Skimmers and an all Roach net weighing over 40lbs was just enough for Kevin Johnson to relegate an excellent 38lbs of Skimmers from Mick Wills into second place.

The winner swapped between maggots up in the water and seed at depth, whilst Mick had an all Skimmer catch at 5 metres on pellet.

The day ticket ponds are in excellent form, Grimsby’s Roland Sparks recorded 2 catches over the 100lbs mark this week from the Oak Tree Pond by fishing pellet over Ground bait. His best catch was 39 carp from 2lbs to 9lbs for an estimated total of 150lbs

Improving temperatures have resulted in more consistent activity from the Carp across the lakes.

Mick Foster from Scunthorpe landed a fine Mirror Carp of 21lbs from the Syndicate Lake .

The North and South ponds are producing plenty of fish up to

15 lbs and the Oak Tree pond is prolific as usual for 2lbs to 10lbs fish.

Sundays Open was split between Tripp Lake and the new Hollywood Lake and run as a float only event. Hollywood Lake dominated the proceedings, producing the first four in the match as Carp, mainly around the 1lb mark and Skimmers to 1 ˝ lbs fed well. Grimsby’s Garry Hansford scored a lake debut win with over 60lbs of fish on pole and pellet.

Garry Chadwick from Hull won Wednesdays open on the Swan Pond, fishing bomb and meat on peg 47 he weighed 62lbs of Carp to 4lbs. Gainsborough angler Paul Wright finished second with 58lbs of Carp which included a couple up in the water on the waggler, suggesting that the fish are beginning to move in response to the warmer weather.

Match Results have varied considerably this week along with the weather conditions.

The Swan Pond produced a terrific weight on Wednesday for Sheffield angler Paul Stanton who caught Carp steadily all match for a total of 109lbs.

A couple of hard frosts later and the winning weight for the Goldthorpe winter league was 56lbs.

The silverfish open on Saturday on the Islands Lake was won in the last hour by Goldthorpes Martin Leck. A maggot feeder fished close to a bush produced a run of 7 Chub in quick succession for over 20lbs to give Martin a total of 34lbs and an easy win.

Sport on the Day Ticket ponds is also weather dependant. An overnight frost usually means a slow start to the day but catches are generally good at the moment.

The syndicate Ponds are in great form and one angler this week landed two Carp over 20lbs in a single session.

Improved weather conditions have led to consistent sport across the complex.

The Oak Tree pond is producing good catches of Carp to a variety of methods with summer baits such as boilies becoming more effective.

The North and South day ticket ponds are also responding to traditional Carp Tactics with Boilies, Pellets and Paste accounting for plenty of double figure fish.

It is noticeable that the carp seem to have feeding spells when sport can be quite hectic. Roland Sparkes from Grimsby had only one Carp all day until something triggered a feeding frenzy in the fish and he landed seven in an hour on the main syndicate lake.

Paul Thompson from Scunthorpe targeted the excellent stock of Perch in the Small Syndicate Pond and landed 12 fish from 1 lb to 2lbs on pole fished worm, this also accounted for Carp to 9lbs and a few other fish which disappeared off into the distance, being too strong for Paul’s pole gear.

A tight match on Wednesday on the Swan Pond saw Steve Bingham win with 66lbs on bomb and meat to just pip Sheffielder Dean Boot who caught 64lbs on pole and pellet.

Saturdays Silverfish Match on the Swan Pond produced another win for Neil Vessey, again on his favoured pole and pellet approach, Neil weighed just short of 30lbs of Skimmers in a match which saw a string of good weights.

Tripp fished well for the Queen Bess match on Sunday and Carl Urry led the way with 58lbs of Carp on the waggler. His father Jim followed in second place with a 30lbs net of Simmers.
